Hi, [firstname|there]!

Happy Halloween! As we head into cooler temperatures and the holiday season, we are staying busy at Iowa’s Dairy Center! We had a great time at World Dairy Expo at the beginning of the month. The Northeast Iowa Community College dairy judging team found great success at the World Dairy Expo contests. Learn more about the team below. Be on the lookout for upcoming opportunities for students, farmers, and community members at Iowa’s Dairy Center!

2023 NICC Dairy Judging Team

Updates from World Dairy Expo Judging Contest

By: Blake Courtney

The 2023 World Dairy Expo Post-Secondary Dairy Judging Contest is in the books, and a very successful one it was for the Northeast Iowa Community College Dairy Judging Team! The team consisted of team members Peyton Luehmann, Cheyanne Troendle, Rebecca Schumann, and Kaylee Ferfecki. For three of the four team members, this was the first major contest that they participated in. As classes resumed this fall, these second-year students as well as some first-year students started practicing 3-4 placings classes and a few reasons classes at each of our practices held at various farms in Northeast Iowa.

The judging team and I would like to thank and highlight the farms that helped us achieve success this fall:

  • The NICC Dairy Center – Calmar, IA - Holstein and Jersey cows and heifers
  • The Youth Dairy Classic Show – Manchester, IA – Cows and heifers of All Breeds
  • Prairie Moon Guernseys, The Sivesind Family – Waukon, IA - Guernsey cow classes
  • Moneek View Farms, Glen and Kathy Ohloff Family – Castalia, IA - Holstein cow classes

These farms were extremely helpful in preparation for the WDE contest. We are so thankful for the farms’ willingness to host us, and allowing us to see some high-quality cattle and high-quality classes for practicing. Without them, none of this would be possible!

The World Dairy Expo Judging Contest took place on 2 separate days in Madison, Wisconsin, with the first day being the Practical Contest, and the following day being the Traditional Contest. The highlighted results from the Practical Contest include:

  • 2nd Place Team - Registered Pedigrees

Board Member Feature

Alisha Sedlmayr

I grew up in Michigan out in the country. We had more of a hobby farm when I was growing up, with some chickens, meat rabbits, a few horses, and a garden. When it came time for college, I was recruited to play volleyball at Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa and enjoyed all 4 years there. I now work for the Natural Resource Conservation Service as the Soil Health Specialist for the NE Iowa area. My husband and I reside in Elgin, Iowa with our two dogs. I enjoy gardening, cooking, playing sports, and spending time outdoors with my husband and our dogs.

We are excited to welcome Alisha to our board!
